Did anyone else see this? I just saw it today - Will Smith and Charlize Theron star, Jason Bateman co-stars and he was fabulous. I love him... almost as much as Will.
Jason played 'Ray,' a very idealistic, but not naive, PR exec, trying to "change the world." Ray becomes indebted to Hancock when Hancock saves his life. Ray, in return, commits himself to revamping Hancock's image and turning him into a legitimate superhero, loved by the city. There was one line where I thought Jason Bateman stepped right into the character of Michael Bluth. Oh god, Bateman has such a dry sense of humor. He can make such apparently innocent lines hilarious and biting. It seems really hard to play the straight man in a film without being boring and merely eye candy, but Jason did it (in my opinion) and was very funny on top of it all.
I thought the plot was interesting. It had quite a lot of unexpected, but plausible twists (but, of course, a lot of things are plausible in a super hero movie, lol!). I'm really not big on super-hero movies at all. I generally find them quite unoriginal and boring. But I liked how in Hancock, the super hero was written as very human and imperfect. Hancock (Will Smith) is an alcoholic and feels very alone and lost. Hancock doesn't quite know the limits or potentials of his superpowers and isn't even quite able to control them. Even though he is a super hero and has a basic "save people and do good" instinct, Hancock often destroys a lot of city property in helping (reminded me a bit of 'Dirty Harry'). That, along with his gruffness/ crudeness, turn people off to him. I also liked how the bad guys were human and not some mythical Marvel monsters, like the Sand Man or a huge alien-looking creature.
So, anyway, AD fans, see this movie! Support Jason Bateman!!
